Title: "Racial Bias in America: How Did We Get Here and Why Are We Stuck?"

Date: Monday, January 29, 2018

Time: 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

Location: Pacific Ballrooms ABC, UCI Student Center

A native of Tennessee who marched as a youth with the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., Attorney Robinson has gained national prominence for over three decades of work in trial law. His legal opinions have spanned issues related to police-involved shootings and the legacy of Confederate symbols in the contemporary United States. He was a founding member of the John Adams Project, an effort enabling him to defend rights of a Guantanamo Bay detainee charged in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The UCI presentation is free and open to the public. Attorney Robinson presents via multi-media and through concluding Question and Answer dialogue a history of race in America, its impact in the criminal justice system and in everyday practices, and strategies to address change through institutional and individual actions.

This presentation is part of campus initiatives on Confronting Extremism and Perspectives on Bias, Prejudice, and Bigotry. The Confronting Extremism initiative, introduced in October 2017, aims to forge new dialogues, scholarship and actions to critically examine proactive and response measures to support social justice efforts on campus in the face of extreme narratives. The Perspectives lecture series, introduced last January, presents campus-wide cultural dialogues to promote discovery, create and disseminate knowledge, and to exemplify the Principles against Intolerance - a policy approved by the Regents of the University of California to foster inclusion.
