2:00 p.m. | Nixon Foundation Speaker

Multipurpose Academic & Administrative Building Executive Commons (MPAA Room #100)

"Behind the Story of President Nixon's Historical Trip to China"

For the 2019 Lunar New Year celebration, the Long U.S.-China Institute welcomes the Richard Nixon Foundation and Luke Nichter from Texas A&M University for an examination of the Nixon Tapes, administration documents and historical artifacts to reveal the internal administration conversations leading up to the opening of China. Using the Nixon Tapes as a primary source of discussion, Nichter, along with UCI political scientist and presidential expert Matthew Beckmann, and UCI professor of history and Long U.S.-China Institute executive director Emily Baum, will take the audience through the strategy, discussions and considerations of the Nixon White House. These considerations ranged from Cold War era foreign policy to diplomacy with a nation for the first time in nearly a quarter century, as well as domestic political reprisals.

History remembers President Nixon's trip to China as the Week that Changed the World. And now guests will begin to understand the multifaceted considerations that went into the planning and organizing of this groundbreaking foreign policy achievement, which laid the groundwork for the most significant international relationship of the modern era.
