Earthquakes are among our region’s most significant safety threats. While many of us have lived in earthquake county for years and know how to protect ourselves, there are others who do not. Major earthquakes can happen at any time and nearly anywhere in California. Help us keep our campus prepared and safe by participating in the 11th Anniversary of the Great ShakeOut.
A campuswide zotALERT text, classroom beacon, and desktop notification will be sent at 10:17 a.m. on Thursday, October 17, reminding everyone to participate. Wherever you are, Drop, Cover, and Hold On, when your receive the alert.
- DROP to the ground (before the earthquake knocks you down);
- Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and;
- HOLD ON to your shelter and be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops.
If there is no table or desk near you, drop to the ground and then, if possible, move to an inside corner of the room away from any windows. Be in a crawling position to protect yourself and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. DO NOT move to another location or run outside. Earthquakes occur without any warning and may be so violent that you cannot run or crawl. Visit www.earthquakecountry.org/dropcoverholdon/ to learn what to do in other settings.
Faculty: Visit www.ShakeOut.org/california/colleges for an instructional guide and a 4-slide PowerPoint presentation for use in the classroom. The presentation links to a 60-second “Drill Broadcast” narration with earthquake sound effects that can be played during the drill.
