Alternative Spring Break Sites 2015:
- Theme: Sharing History: Discussing the Impact of the Voices Lost
Location: Manzanar, CA
Site: Manzanar National Park
Description: We will work in one of ten WWII Japanese internment camps, Manzanar. We'll work on site-improvement projects, and exploring the importance of remembering a history that often tends to be erased. This trip will provide the opportunity to connect the difficult experiences lived by institutional racism that goes beyond the Japanese American community-from Native Americans and colonialism to Muslim Americans and Islamophobia post 9/11. Additionally, we will be questioning what citizenship in the United States really means and evaluate the true meaning(s) of terms such as “immigration” and “internment.” - Theme: More than Tourism: Exploring Catalina's Unique Environment & History
Location: Catalina Island, CA
Site: Catalina Island Conservancy
Description: Catalina Island has a rish history of being native ground for indigenious groups and unique plants and animals. We will be working with the Catalina Island Conservancy to learn more about environmental conservation and preservation. Furthermore, we will also explore the island's current demographics, culture and economic conditions today by looking into the historical context of the island itself.
IMPORTANT (PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING):
Alternative Break is open to all UCI undergraduate students. Students must be in good academic standing and not on academic probabtion. UCI Extension students are not eligible at this time.
*Program Support: Upon acceptance to the Alternative Winter Break program, participants will be required to attend at least one Cross-Cultural Center sponsored program during the academic year. For more information about community engagement and diversity opportunities visitwww.ccc.uci.edu.
*Fees & Payments: Upon acceptance, all applicants pay a trip-fee of $185. This fee covers transportation to/from service site, lodging, and most meals. NOTE: Accommodations vary per service site. Applicants who are accepted will be required to pay an initial down payment of $50. Payment deadline TBD. Eligible drivers will receive the discounted rate of: $155.
*Notification: Applicants will be notified as to the status of their application (via email) no later than November 17, 2015.
*Orientation: Upon acceptance, participants must attend a mandatory Alternative Break orientation on Friday, December 4, 5:00 pm-7:00 pm.
*Policies: Upon acceptance into the program, you will sign agreements (alcohol and drug free, liability, conduct, etc.)
