Tommy Orange joins UCI for an engaging virtual event facilitated by Professor Alicia Carroll and hosted by the Office of Inclusive Excellence, UCI Libraries, and the Division of Student Affairs. Recipient of several prestigious literary awards for his debut novel, There There, Mr. Orange draws on his Cheyenne and Arapaho backgrounds to create a masterful tale about "urban Indians" in the United States. His sensitive and stark narratives confront the current representations and historical treatment of indigenous peoples. He is the recipient of a PEN/Hemingway Award, a National Book Critics Circle John Leonard Prize for outstanding first book in any genre, and a Center for Fiction First Novel Prize.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
There There by Tommy Orange – a shattering novel that follows twelve characters from Native communities: all traveling to the Big Oakland Powwow, all connected to one another in ways they may not yet realize.
