As a new employee, when can I submit my claims for reimbursement?

Although your coverage is in effect on your first day of eligibility, it is best to wait 6-8 weeks in order for your enrollment data to be processed and added to the insurance plan's database system.

I'm not happy with the benefit plan(s) I selected. When can I make a change?

You can change your HMO plan on a monthly basis if the change form is submitted to and processed by payroll by the mid-point of the month. Other medical and dental plan changes are made during Open Enrollment, which is normally in the month of November each year; you can cancel these plans as well as your other insurance plans at any time.

I'm leaving the university. When will my insurance coverage end?

Coverage continues through the last day of the month of your separation, i.e., for a 8/4 separation, coverage would end 8/31.

Can I continue my enrollment in the same benefits I have now?

Benefits may be continued through the COBRA program. Call your local benefits office for assistance.

Can I change my existing coverage when I switch to COBRA?

Not unless you are enrolled in an HMO and will be moving outside the service area. You may change your existing coverage during Open Enrollment in November of each year.

Do I have to enroll everyone that is currently enrolled in my benefits plans?

No. You may continue coverage for yourself or any of your dependents currently covered.

What is the cost?

You are responsible for the entire cost of the gross premium plus an additional 2% administrative fee.

How long can I keep coverage with COBRA? Can I stop it at any time?

You can continue COBRA coverage for up to 18 months. You may cancel your coverage at any time during that period. COBRA eligibility will end if you become eligible for insurance through another source. Under certain conditions, COBRA may continued beyond 18 months. Please call your benefits office for assistance.

My dependent child is turning 23, can s/he continue with my coverage?

The child may continue with the same health, dental and vision coverage under the COBRA program for up to 36 months. Under certain conditions, the dependent child may be re-enrolled as an adult dependent relative. Please contact your local benefits office for assistance.

Can I change to a new doctor in my HMO?

Yes, by calling the Medical Plan's membership services department directly. The change will go into effect in accordance with payroll deadlines. The number of allowable changes varies by Plan.

Is there a pharmacy card for the UC Care plan?

No. Your medical ID card will serve as the pharmacy card.

My insurance company won't process my claims. What should I do?

Call the Plan and/or provider group to determine the exact nature of the problem. If you continue to have problems, contact the Health Care Facilitator for assistance.

My insurance plan tells me my dependent is not covered. What should I do?

Check your enrollment records and/or your pay stub for appropriate coverage level. If everything is correct, call the Benefits office for assistance.
