HOW TO: Implement Alternate and Flexible Work Schedules

Summary: An alternate work schedule is a variation of the standard 5 day / 40 hour work schedule. It may include a 9/80, a 4/40, or other combination. Flex time allows for some daily, weekly, or monthly variation. Start and end times are flexible hours other than the standard 8:00 to 5:00 work-day. An alternate work schedule may allow for a better balance of work life and home life; however, it must also result in a continuation of high quality service to customers.

What you should do: How to implement:
1 Initiate a request for an alternate or flexible work schedule
  1. An employee or a supervisor may initiate the request either orally or in writing.
2 Determine feasibility based on operational needs
  1. Employee checklist
  2. Supervisor checklist

3 Check the collective bargaining provision or procedure covering alternate and flexible work schedules
  1. For represented employees, review the approriate collective bargaining agreement(s)
  2. For non-represented employees, review Personnel Procedures for UCI Staff Members Procedure 31 Section C3.
