CHECKLIST: Supervisor's Preparation for Employees' First Year Milestones (OnBoarding of New Staff)
Summary: Important milestones with your employee will occur at 6 months, 9 months, and during the twelfth month of their first year. These will include performance reviews, training, feedback, and goal setting. |

At six months |
- Meet with employee to review performance to date to:
- Ensure a clear understanding of your expectations and
- how well those are being met
- Conduct a written performance evaluation
- Elicit and answer any questions / concerns.
- Discuss training as:
- Completed
- Planned for future training
- Schedule in-house training opportunities
- Enable subscription to publications and associations (if applicable) for continued learning
- Attend conferences for their area of specialty.
- On-going meetings with key individuals

At nine months |
- Conduct on-going performance discussions and elicit and answer any questions/concerns
- Obtain feedback on training they’ve attended
- If employee needs improvement in any aspect of his/her performance, identify a development plan, review with your HR Consultant, then discuss it with your employee
- Schedule training or other development programs as discussed

During the twelfth month |
- Completion of written annual performance review with the employee
- Discuss upcoming goals and initiatives
- Follow-up on mentorship program
- Discussion of employee’s career goals and other training or development opportunities
- Discuss how well the employee has performed during last 12 months.
- Ask for suggestions that would assist or improve operations involving the position/department
